Land Art

I have been making temporary sculptures and arrangements of objects & materials during walks on beaches for some time, but an opportunity in 2002 to attend four weekend workshops on the subject of 'Land Art' gave me a really good chance to experiment and be exposed to wider ideas about this area of art activity. The links below take you to more about that course, with images of my own and others' work and some background information.

...and what is this "Land Art" anyway? My own understanding and definition of it is: Outdoor, temporary, sculpture [forming, arranging, placing objects and material], using primarily natural materials and features that can be found at that site and working in response to the specific place and conditions, accepting that the work will be subject to disintegration by the actions of gravity, water, sun and frost, wind, animal and human damage. I distinguish this from placing other art works in the landscape [eg: bronze sculptures] or landscaping to produce 'permanent' work - these I would describe as 'art in the landscape'....
